NOTE: For those of you worried about damage and cancellations due to the earthquake Wednesday evening, please check with the individual events and organizers. Most places in and around Santiago that are not ocean front communities experienced minimal damage and should be operating normally. If your plans involved a coastal area or locations further north towards the center of the quake, check with their online sites and try to contact them by text or e-mail for further information.

Fiestas Patrias is one of the most important holiday celebrations in Chile; it’s also known as Dieci-ocho (eighteen). The event itself is made up of two days, September 18th, celebrating Chile’s independence day, and September 19th, the Day of the Glories of the Army. Many people take the whole week off and travel within Chile to celebrate with their family.

Chilean Flag Chile Fiestas Patrias Celebration Symbol Country Bandera Santiago Tourist Beth Delthony

During the holidays you will see a increase in Chilean flags, there is a rarely enforced law that requires all houses and apartment buildings to fly the flag on both days. Please also note all shopping centers, outside of their movie theaters and some restaurants are closed, and many small businesses close as well. While many restaurants close to allow their employees to celebrate with their families some will be open, often with special menus to celebrate the holidays with you. The main tourist hubs are your best bet for food and drinks over the holiday. If you want to cook at home or have an asado, make sure to buy food in advance and if you live or are staying in an apartment complex, and want to use your common areas ask very early as they may be in high demand.

Fondas (also called Ramadas) are big parties or festivals, generally consisting of: food, drink, live music, dancing, crafts and other things for sale, and more. They are a big part of the celebration and are held all over the country during the week of Fiestas Patrias, with many communities offering various celebratory events during the entire month of September. Some last one day, others last the entire week and some even offer camping areas where people can spend the night. During the day, unless otherwise noted by an age limitation, the Fondas are family-friendly, but as evening approaches they can get a bit rowdier and many go on until very late. They also vary greatly in size, with the larger ones hosting thousands of people, so if you go, be safe and don’t take anything you wouldn’t want to lose.

Here is a list of many of the Fondas scheduled for 2015: they cater to all types of people, from traditional folk music to hard-core rock and roll and there’s even a large selection of vegetarian options. Check them out to find the one that’s right for you! As usual we will be updating this list with any Fondas we hear about so check back, and if you know of any not on our list please send us the info. We have tried to provide the most updated information but if you find anything has changed please let us know that as well!

*Note not all the Fonda’s have listed their dates online for 2015, for those that haven’t (many are posted online in early to mid September) we have * (starred) them, and listed their previous information for your reference, they are often held in the same locations each year, especially in smaller communities.
