Celebrating New Year’s Eve (Año Nuevo) in South America is more of a family affair than in other countries. Most people leave work early and then have a late dinner and watch the fireworks with their families and then if they go out, leave around 1-2am to go to a club, often until 8-10am. Most businesses close early on New Year’s Eve and are closed on New Year’s Day in celebration of the holiday. If you would prefer to cook your own dinner, check out our Thanksgiving article for tips.

That being the case, it’s not easy to get reservations at your favorite local restaurant as many of them are closed for the holiday. The restaurants that are open are often located in hotels, have a set menu for the holiday, and it can be quite expensive. If you want to have dinner out it’s a good idea to plan ahead as last minute options are usually just local tourist bars with picadas (meat and cheese plates or appetizers). Note it can also be quite difficult to find an empty taxi to get around town so if you plan on traveling around the city it’s a good time to try and call for a cab rather than trying to hail one on the street.

If you’re celebrating with your Chilean family or friends, be prepared to partake in some of their New Year’s Eve traditions to bring you good luck, love and fortune in the coming year. If you need more money, make sure to place a gold ring in your champagne glass (just don’t swallow it!), or place money inside your shoe, and make sure to eat some lentils. If love is your desire, make sure the first person you hug is of the opposite sex, and wear that yellow underwear you were given for Christmas, bonus if you wear them inside out until midnight and then turn them around you will also get overall good luck. If you need some changes in your life make sure to wear new clothes to your New Year’s Eve party. If you want a good year ahead, eat a grape for each month for good luck, if you get any sour grapes be prepared for some not so good luck that month. If your wish is to travel make sure you bring your suitcase to the New Year’s celebrations, running around the block with your suitcase should ensure lots of travel in the upcoming year. Some people celebrate by burning effigies, out with old in with the new. Others head to the local cemetery to spend the evening with their dearly departed.

There are several different points for fireworks in Santiago, but the biggest fireworks display in Chile is in Valparaíso/Viña Del Mar. If you want to go to Valparaíso/Viña Del Mar or surrounding towns, it’s best to make your reservations ahead of time and as early as possible. Be prepared for the rates to jump for this holiday, and  it’s very unlikely that you will find discounted accommodations anywhere in the area. They claim over a million people visit the area each year so don’t bet on being able to get a room if you don’t have a reservation. If you are traveling to the beaches on the 31st, it’s advisable to leave early, your best bet is to get on the road before noon, as they close down the streets after a certain point and there is often a lot of traffic with all the people coming for the celebrations.

The fireworks in Valparaíso/Viña Del Mar start just around midnight and last for about 20 minutes; they are set off on boats on the ocean at different points along the coast so no matter where you are in the area, you should get a good show. After the fireworks, people flood into the streets and it can be very chaotic with the huge crowds and often a lot of drinking so make sure you keep your belongings safe and don’t bring anything you don’t need with you! The party usually goes until dawn here and lots of people who didn’t make room reservations sleep on the beaches or in the parks around town. If you stay in Santiago, the biggest fireworks display is set off from the Torre Entel in Santiago Centro, nearest Metro is Moneda. People stake out their spots early in the day so expect a big crowd.
