Hostel:  Castillo Surfista Hostel

Castillo Surfista Hostel, Santiago, Chile

Castillo Surfista is owned and operated by Californian surf guru, Jonathan. Having lived in Chile for several years, Jonathan managed to fulfil a dream and open his hostel in early 2012. While it’s open to everyone, if you’re a keen surfer, this is the place to go – what Jonathan doesn’t know about surfing (especially in Chile) isn’t worth knowing.

Location

Castillo Surfista is a few blocks away from Baquedano Metro station. It’s in a leafy, quiet neighbourhood, filled with lovely old houses. It’s also conveniently very close to Bellavista, so fear not, nightclubbers – you’re within walking distance.

Facilities

The hostel is simple but comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped and pretty big, there’s a large dining room, a small alternative breakfast room and a big living area, with the requisite squishy couches.

Common areas

The afore-mentioned living area and dining area together with an outdoor sitting area, make up communal spaces. The living area has a great big TV, with movies available. As you may have worked out from the title, the hostel is themed around surfing and castle décors… It’s a strange combo but it works!

Rooms

The hostel has 20 beds in total, with a mix of dormitory and private rooms. All rooms are light and spacious. Visit the website for (better) photos.

Prices

Prices (per person) start at $9,000 CLP for a dormitory bed, up to around $25,000 for a private double room. All rooms share the bathrooms. Visit the website or Hostelbookers, Hostelworld or Expedia.com to make reservations.

Staff

Ask the staff for any questions about the area, the city or the chance to go surfing. They’re very friendly and laid-back.

Extras

  • Breakfast and WiFi are included in the room price.
  • BBQs happen once a week.
  • Towels are available for hire for $450 CLP each.
  • Trips to the beach – if you want to go surfing or try it out for the first time with a surf school, talk to the staff and they will be able to help! They also offer day trips to the beach (when possible) for a very friendly cost.
